Apple awarded broad touch screen patent

A patent applied for in 2007 was awarded to Apple broadly covering touch screen functionality.

The patent essentially gives ownership to the multi-touch screen interface used by most of today’s smart phones and tablets.

With that IP in their back pockets, Apple could have huge leverage on rivals like HTC, Samsung, Motorola, RIM, Nokia and others.  There have been a spate of lawsuits recently in this space and this patent adds to the impressive arsenal Apple has to defend and beat back competitors in one of the fastest growing hardware markets.
