Megaupload shuttered for copyright infringement

During a week that saw huge responses from the Internet world regarding SOPA and PIPA legislation, a major file sharing site was seized.

The implications sent a heads up to many other online storage sites like MediaFire, RapidShare, YouSendIt, Dropbox and Box.net.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act, DCMA, allows for some data to be shared provided non-owned copyrighted material is not profited from and is removed immediately when the hosting site is contacted.

It seems Megaupload made as much as $ 175 million by illegally using $ 500 million worth of copyrighted material and not removing that data when contacted by authorities.
